Human-in-the-loop is not enough.

Presence is not judgment; loops need meaningful gates.

Adding a human step to an AI workflow is easy. Asking someone to approve, review, or sign off is a simple insertion. But presence is not the same as judgment. A human in the loop can still be a passive observer, a rubber stamp, or a bottleneck.

The value of a human step depends on what the person is actually doing there. Are they applying real judgment to a decision that changes what happens next? Or are they clicking through because the process requires a click?

A loop without judgment is just a delay.

A meaningful human gate exists only where a human is needed to judge something that cannot be reduced to a rule. Everything else should be checked automatically or trusted to run.

The goal is not to involve people in every step. It is to involve them in the steps where their judgment matters.
